Silver Song Club
The Sing For Your Life partnership designs and delivers programmes of social music making for older people who may be socially isolated or suffering from the effects of age related health problems.
The programmes are delivered through The Silver Song Club network which operates over 30 clubs across the South East region, led by trained facilitators supported by volunteers drawn from local amateur music groups. Click here for the current timetable.
Silver Song Clubs aim to:
- Provide meaningful and stimulating activities for older people
- Create an opportunity for them to build a social network
- Bring together the socially isolated, and unite them through shared musical activities
- Offer a platform to share memories and experiences linked to a range of well-known popular songs
The Littlehampton Silver Song Club, comprising volunteers from The Angmering Chorale, meet on a regular basis at The Tamarisk Centre, Littlehampton and Rustington Methodist Church Hall. They encourage elderly and disadvantaged people to join in singing and playing their old favourite songs, promoting the use of mind and body in a most enjoyable and at times hilarious way. This is funded by various grants, including an Awards for All grant, and the 'Making Music' organisation. If you know of a group who could benefit from these activities and would like more information, please contact the facilitator Rita Russell.
A recent issue of the Sing for your Life newsletter says: Rosemary Pardey, the Area Co-ordinator for West Sussex, recently visited the Littlehampton Silver Song Club, and was thrilled with what she experienced “Rita, the facilitator, is such a lively extrovert that she attracts everyone’s attention right from the start. There were two birthday celebrations, - one for a lady of 97. Len, the pianist, who is about 90, played a medley of well known TV signature tunes for everyone to guess at. He is a fantastic pianist and can play almost anything – mostly without music. All in all there is a wonderful mix with the support of some exceptional volunteers, whose talents included some excellent guitar playing and arrangements for hand bells”. With much sorrow, we note that Len Lee died in September 2009.
